Boreaalisten ekoklimaattisten vyöhykkeiden järjestelmässä puutarha sijaitsee hemiboreaalisen vyöhykkeen pohjoisreunalla. Puutarha on merkitty kartalle punaisella pisteellä. HB = hemiboreaalinen, SB = eteläboreaalinen, MB = keskiboreaalinen, NB = pohjoisboreaalinen ja HA = hemiarktinen. Tuhkanen, S. 1984: A circumpolar system of climatic phytogeographical regions. Acta Botanica Fennica 127: 1-50. Based on Boreal Ecoclimatic Zones the garden is located on the Northern edge of the Hemiboreal zone. The garden is marked with a red dot on the map. Perustietoja rhodopuutarhan ja arboretumin sijainnista, ilmastosta ja luonnon kasvillisuudesta: * Puutarha sijaitsee Turun saariston saaressa, merenlahden rannan läheisyydessä. * Suurten kallioiden välisessä laaksossa kasvaa etupäässä mäntyä, katajaa ja jonkin verran kuusta ja koivua. * Maanpeittokasveina on mm. mustikkaa, puolukkaa, juolukkaa, valkovuokkoa, kanervaa, variksenmarjaa, saniaista ja maariankämmekkää. * Alue saa hyvin vettä kallioilta ja ympäröiviltä soilta, joilla kasvaa suopursua, mikä nykyään katsotaan kuuluvan Rhododendron sukuun. * Maassa oleva multa on tummaa ja turvepitoista ja happamuusaste on luonnostaan sopivaa rhodoille, pH noin 5.5. * Alueen mikroilmasto on lähes tuuleton ja ympäristöään selkeästi lämpimämpi. Ympäröivät kalliot suojaavat hyvin tuulelta ja luovuttavat kesällä auringosta varastoimaansa lämpöä. * Talvella lunta on vähän, jos ollenkaan, joten rhodoille ei ole luontaista lumisuojaa. Tosin lämpötila on talvella useimmiten selvästi lämpimämpi kuin mantereella. Some basic information on the location, climate and nature plants of the Rhododendron Garden and Arboretum: * The garden is on an island of the Turku Archipelago, close to the shore of the Baltic Sea. * The garden is in a valley surrounded by rocks. The natural vegetation consists of trees and shrubs such as Pinus sylvetris, Picea abies, Betula pendula and Juniperus communis. * Natural ground covering plants are e.g. Vaccinium myrtillus, Vaccinium vitis-idaea, Vaccinium uliginosum, Calluna vulgaris, Empetrum nigrum, Anemone nemorosa and Dactylorhiza maculata. * Water is flowing from the rocks and neighbouring marshes. The most common plant on the marshes is Rhododendron tomentosum! * The soil consists of black peat. The pH of the soil is close to 5.5 and as such perfect for rhododendrons. * The microclimate is almost windless and warmer than the average temperature on the island. The surrounding high rocks shield from the storms and the rocks radiate heat stored from sunshine. However, during winters there is not always snow so you cannot depend on good snow cover.

Alppiruusujen lajikepuutarha on vielä nuori, vanhimmat alppiruusut olen istuttanut vasta v. 1999. Alppiruusut kasvavat nopeasti ja ilahduttavat kesäisin upealla kukinnallaan. Lajikepuutarhassa oli v. 2009 n. 100 eri alppiruusulajiketta. The hybrid garden is still young, I planted the oldest Rhododendrons in 1999. The Rhododendrons grow fast and delight with abundant flowering. In 2009 there were approx. 100 Rhododendron hybrids in this part of the garden.

Atsaleat kukkivat pitkospuiden varrella. Atsalea-alueella oli v. 2009 istutettuna n. 70 eri lajia ja lajiketta. Kuvagalleria: Atsaleojen kukintaa kesällä 2005 saariston metsäpuutarhassa. Azaleas are flowering along the wooden causeway. In 2009 there were approx. 70 azalea species and hybrids in this part of the garden. Tein kesällä 2005 laakson rinteelle uuden istutusalueen alppiruusuille, pääpainona erilaiset luonnonlajit. Monet lajeista eivät kuki kovinkaan nuorina, mutta vastapainoksi niillä on erityisen kauniit lehdet ja komea kasvutapa. Alueella oli v. 2009 istutettuna n. 40 eri Rhododendron lajia. I established in summer 2005 a new garden area, mainly for various Rhododendron species. Most of the species do not flower in several years but on the other hand they have specially beautiful leaves and handsome growth habit. In 2009 there were approx. 40 different Rhododendron species growing in the area.

Lumi on paras mahdollinen suoja talvella. Valitettavasti lunta on saaristossa harvoin kovinkaan paksulti ja lumi sulaa usein pois talven lauhojen kausien aikana. Alkuvuosina suojasin alppiruusuja varjostusverkoilla ja havuilla, mutta kasvien määrän kasvaessa jätin työläät suojaukset laittamatta. Muutamia heikkokestoisimpia olen vienyt talven ajaksi kylmälavaan tai kasvihuoneeseen. Snow is the best possible protection during the winter. Unfortunately, thick layer of snow is rare in the archipelago and quite often the snow melts during warmer periods of the winter. In earlier years I protected the plants with shading cloths and Picea branches, but as the number of plants increased I left out the laborious protection. Some of less the hardy plants I have moved to cold frames or greenhouse.

Kasvatan alppiruusuja ja atsaleoja luonnonlajien ja risteytysten siemenistä. Teen risteytyksiä tavoitteena saada aikaiseksi talvenkestäviä, kukinnaltaan ja lehdistöltään kauniita uusia lajikkeita. Taimien määrä kasvaa helposti useisiin tuhansiin, kun etukäteen ei voi tietää mistä siemenestä kasvaa kasvaa ainutlaatuisen hyvä pensas. Taimen ensikukintaa voi joutua odottamaan jopa 4 - 6 vuotta. Tämän vuoksi olen joutunut tekemään suurehkot taimikasvatusalueet, joilla kasvatan taimiani. Olen harrastaja enkä kasvata taimia myyntiin. I grow rhododendrons and azaleas from seeds of species and crosses. My goal in hybridization is to get new hybrids that are hardy for the Finnish climate and have beautiful flowers and good foliage. The number of plants rise easily to thousands when you don't know from which seed you get the best plants. You may need to wait 4 to 6 years for the first flowering. Because of this I have had to make quite large nursery beds for my plants. This is my hobby and I do not sell plants.
