Lumi on paras mahdollinen suoja talvella. Valitettavasti lunta on saaristossa harvoin kovinkaan paksulti ja lumi sulaa usein pois talven lauhojen kausien aikana. Alkuvuosina suojasin alppiruusuja varjostusverkoilla ja havuilla, mutta kasvien määrän kasvaessa jätin työläät suojaukset laittamatta. Muutamia heikkokestoisimpia olen vienyt talven ajaksi kylmälavaan tai kasvihuoneeseen.
Snow is the best possible protection during the winter. Unfortunately, thick layer of snow is rare in the archipelago and quite often the snow melts during warmer periods of the winter. In earlier years I protected the plants with shading cloths and Picea branches, but as the number of plants increased I left out the laborious protection. Some of less the hardy plants I have moved to cold frames or greenhouse.
