Neitseellinen metsä kallioiden välissä oli kaunis ja sen olisi ihan hyvin voinut jättää sellaiseksi.
Tontilta löytyi kuitenkin paljon vastaavanlaista maisemaa, joten ajattelin uhrata pienen osan metsää haaveelleni, tehdä tänne alppiruusupuisto.
Rakas vaimoni oli kovin epäileväinen onnistumisen suhteen, mutta antoi siunauksensa: Istuta nyt rhodo tai pari ja, jos jostain ihmeen syystä saat ne säilymään hengissä, istuta seuraavana vuonna pari lisää.
Heh heh, vai että muka pari rhodoa vuosittain. :)

Year 2000
Virgin forest in a beautiful valley between rocks on an island in the Turku Archipelago could have been left untouched. However, these kinds of sceneries were so common on the property that I thought of sacrificing a small area of the forest for my dream, to make a Rhododendron garden.
My lovely wife was a bit suspicious on the success but gave her blessing: Plant a rhodo or two and, if you for some for odd reason get them stay alive, plant next year a couple more of them.
Haha, do you really mean only a couple of rhodos yearly? :)

Harvensin puustoa, ehkä vähän liikaakin ja jälkeenpäin harmitti, että poistin tarpeettomasti katajia. Nyttemmin olen antanut uusien katajataimien kasvaa.
Tein tervatut pitkospuut, jotta kostealla maaperällä olisi helpompi kävellä ja mustikanvarvut ja
muu aluskasvillisuus säilyisi tallaamiselta.
Pienet alppiruusut näyttävät tässä todella vaatimattoman pieniltä puskilta. Kuvanottohetkellä 28.8.2001, minulla oli metsään istutettuna 91 rhodon ja atsalean tainta.
Höh, niin että missäkö? No, näkyyhän ne tuolla ihan selvästi! Jotkut pienimmät taimet olivat vasta kymmensenttisiä.

Year 2001
I cut down trees, may be too many and afterwards I was a bit annoyed that I had unnecessarily cut down several Juniperus communis bushes. Lately I have let the new Juniperus plants to grow.
I made tarred wooden causeways so that it would be easier to walk around and not trample on the natural ground covering plants e.g. Vaccinium myrtillus, Calluna vulgaris, Anemone nemorosa and Dactylorhiza maculata.
The planted plants look actually pretty small in this picture. There were a total of 91 rhododendrons and azaleas planted when I took this picture on the 28-Oct-2001.
So, where are the plants? Hah, they are clearly seen! Some of the smallest ones are though only 10 cm (4 inch) seedlings.

Alppiruusut kukkivat! Mitä juhlaa!
Vaimokin jo alkoi vähitellen uskoa, että ehkä tästä sittenkin voi tulla jotain.
No, olihan tämä vielä aika kaukana paratiisista ja otin rhodoista enimmäkseen lähikuvia. :)

The rhododendrons are flowering! What a joy!
Even my wife started to believe that may this would lead to something.
Hmm, this was still far from a paradise and I took mainly close-up pictures of the plants. :)

Syksyllä rakensin portaat ylös kalliolle. Siellä oli mukava haaveilla, siristellä silmiään ja kuvitella, miten muutaman vuoden kuluttua alue olisi kukkivien alppiruusujen ja atsaleojen peitossa.

In the autumn I built stairs up the cliff. Up there it was a pleasure to dream, screw up my eyes and imagine how after few years the scenery would be filled with flowering rhododendrons and azaleas.

Vuosi 2003
Tein puutarhaan muutaman pienen lammen ja niitä yhdistävän puron. Lammen yli rakensin kaarisillan.
Rhodot olivat kasvaneet hyvin ja kukintaa oli kiva katsella. Taimia oli kertynyt jo yli 300 kpl.

Year 2003
I dug some small ponds in the garden and a stream. Over one of the ponds I built an arch bridge.
The rhododendrons had grown well and it was enjoyable to watch them. The number of plants totaled 300 pcs.

Pitkospuiden ja kallion reunan väliin olin istuttanut atsaleoja. Pieniähän ne vielä olivat, mutta haaveissa näin ne jo paljon suurempina.

I had planted azaleas along the wooden causeway on the side of the rock. They there small but I saw them already a lot larger in my daydreams.

Rhodojen kukinta oli kohtuullisen hyvä.
Etualalla on punakukkainen 'Nova Zembla', jota olin puutarhafoorumin palstoilla moittinut heikkokestoiseksi ja harvakasvuiseksi roiskoksi. Minulla se on ollut yksi kauneimmistani.

The flowering of the rhododendrons was reasonably good.
In front is the red 'Nova Zembla'. It has a reputation of being not hardy enough in Finland and it grows to a straggly bush. For me 'Nova Zembla' has been one of the most beautiful.

Atsaleat pitkospuiden varrella sävähdyttivät värikkyydellään.
Otin kuvan kallion päältä, missä kaadettu kuusi kasvaa maanmyötäisenä ilman runkoa.

The azaleas along the causeway were a colorful sight.
I took the picture above from the rock where a fallen Picea abies grows as ground cover without a trunk.

Vuosi 2005
Alppiruusujen kukinta oli heikkoa, selvä välivuosi.
Niinpä en löytänyt arkistostani yhtään yleiskuvaa alppiruusujen kukinnasta, vain kuvia yksittäispensaista ja kukinnoista. Atsaleat sen sijaan kukkivat mahtavasti!

The flowering of rhododendrons was poor, a clear year between. I could not find from my archive any overview pictures, only pictures of individual plants and flower trusses. Azaleas on the other hand flowered magnificently!

Alppiruusujen kukinta oli kesällä 2006 erityisen mahtavaa suotuisan edellisen kesän vuoksi.
Haave metsästä kukkivaksi paratiisiksi oli toteutunut. :)
Vasemmalla on 'Haaga' ja sen takana 'Mikkeli'. Oikeassa reunassa on 'Pekka'.

The flowering of rhododendrons was especially impressive in summer 2006, partly due to the favorable weather of previous summer.
The dream of changing a forest to a blooming paradise had come true. :)
One the left there is 'Haaga' and behind it 'St. Michel'. On the right is 'Pekka'.
